Finca Comunitaria La Florida is a collectively run community that is producing organic coffee in Chuva, Colomba, Quetzaltenango Guatemala.
The former landless campesinos(farmers) formed a union, SCIDECO(Sociedad Civil para el Desarrollo de Colomba) in the 1980s in order to gain rights of landless workers. The members occupied a part of abandoned coffee finca “La Florida” and negociated with the government for the right of the land. They obtained the ownership of “La Florida” in 2005.
Today they work together to produce organic coffee, honey, chocolate, banana, and more… Although proud owners of their own land, the people of La Florida still live in poverty. Through the Communitarian Ecotourism Project they aim to improve their basic living conditions, develop the community and provide their children with a better future.
For visitors and volunteers the Project offers a possibility to participate in the life of a collective community, practice their Spanish skills, learn about the process of Fair Trade coffee production and experience the beauty of the surrounding nature — to mention a few. Finca La Florida warmly welcomes you to become a part of their incredible story…
